Does the Drik Bala match JHora?

Yes. The Drik Bala virupas follow BPHS Chapter 26 and Raman's 'Graha and Bhava Balas' (pages 89 to 94) and were confirmed against JHora 8.0. If you compare planet by planet, the strength figures line up with what JHora reports.

What is in the convention block?

The convention block echoes every doctrinal choice that produced the result: ayanamsa, node_type, node_aspect_mode, varga, bhava_system, the UTC datetime used, and the nodes_in_drik_bala flag. It exists so every result is reproducible and auditable.

What does the bhava block return?

It returns the total drishti load each of the 12 houses receives, reading every bhava by both its cusp and its sign. That lets you rank houses by how much planetary attention they get without summing aspects yourself.

What is Jaimini rashi drishti?

Jaimini aspects work sign-to-sign rather than planet-to-sign: movable signs aspect fixed signs and so on, per Jaimini Sutras 1.3.13-16. The jaimini_rashi_drishti block returns those aspects with movable, fixed, or dual classification, which is the basis for chara dasha and argala work.

What is house-lord drishti?

For each of the 12 houses, the house_lord_drishti block lists which planets aspect that house's lord and at what strength. It saves a chain of manual lookups when you want to know whether a given house lord is supported or afflicted.

Can I turn off the optional blocks?

Yes. Set include_house_lord to false to drop house_lord_drishti, and include_jaimini to false to drop jaimini_rashi_drishti. The other four blocks always return. This keeps responses lean when you only need core graha drishti and Drik Bala.

About 300ms per call. That covers all six blocks: convention, graha drishti, Drik Bala, bhava load, house-lord aspects, and Jaimini rashi drishti. It is fast enough to compute aspects on demand inside a chart view.

Which ayanamsa does it support?

Lahiri is the default, and other sidereal ayanamsas are supported via the ayanamsa option. Whichever you choose is recorded in the convention block so the result is traceable to the school you follow.

What birth data does the endpoint need?

Send a subject with birth data: year, month, day, hour, minute, plus either a city and country code or latitude, longitude, and timezone. The API resolves the location and builds the sidereal chart before computing aspects.

Does it work for divisional charts?

Yes. The varga option defaults to D1 (rasi) but accepts divisional chart codes, so you can compute drishti on a varga chart. The chosen varga is echoed in the convention block alongside the other doctrinal settings.

Why do other Vedic APIs give different Drik Bala numbers?

Usually because they conflate BPHS Chapter 26 and Chapter 27, applying graha drishti fractions where the Drik Bala drishti-pinda rule belongs. The two chapters are separate models. This API keeps them distinct, which is why its Drik Bala matches JHora.

The Vedic Aspects API computes drishti the way the classical texts define it, not the way most libraries approximate it. One POST to /api/v3/vedic/aspects returns six independent blocks. The convention block echoes the doctrine you ran (ayanamsa, node_type, node_aspect_mode, varga, bhava_system, datetime_utc, nodes_in_drik_bala) so you can audit every result. The graha_drishti block gives BPHS Chapter 27 whole-sign aspect rows per planet, each aspected sign tagged with its full-strength fraction of a quarter, half, three-quarters, or full. The drik_bala block gives BPHS Chapter 26 aspectual strength per planet in virupas, matching JHora 8.0. The bhava block sums the total drishti load each of the 12 houses receives. Two optional blocks add house_lord_drishti (which planets aspect each house lord) and jaimini_rashi_drishti (sign-to-sign aspects classified movable, fixed, or dual). Response time is about 300ms. What is graha drishti and how does the API calculate it?

Graha drishti is planetary sight: in Parashari astrology a planet does not only affect the sign it sits in, it casts aspects onto other signs.

Every planet aspects the 7th sign from itself in full.

Beyond that, Mars adds the 4th and 8th, Jupiter adds the 5th and 9th, and Saturn adds the 3rd and 10th, each with its own strength.

The API follows BPHS Chapter 27 and returns one row per planet listing each aspected sign with a full-strength fraction: a quarter, a half, three-quarters, or full.

Those fractions come straight from the Santhanam translation and were checked against JHora 8.0 row by row.

You get the raw rows, so you can render an aspect grid, drive yoga logic, or feed an interpretation layer without re-deriving the rules yourself.

How is Drik Bala different from graha drishti?

This is the trap most APIs fall into.

Graha drishti (BPHS Chapter 27) and Drik Bala (BPHS Chapter 26) are two separate models, not one wrapped in the other.

Drik Bala is aspectual strength measured in virupas, part of the Shadbala framework, and its drishti-pinda fractions are computed by a different rule than the Chapter 27 aspect fractions.

The API keeps them apart on purpose.

The drik_bala block returns a contributions list plus a per_target summary so you can see exactly which aspecting planet added or subtracted strength from each target.

Because the virupa math follows Chapter 26 and Raman's 'Graha and Bhava Balas', the numbers line up with JHora 8.0.

If you have ever seen two tools disagree on Drik Bala, it is almost always because one conflated these two chapters.

How do Rahu and Ketu aspects work?

The nodes are where schools disagree, so the API makes the choice explicit instead of hiding it.

The node_aspect_mode option takes three values.

seventh_only, the default, casts only the 7th-sign opposition from each node, which is what most modern Parashari schools teach.

bphs_5_7_9 gives the nodes the 5th, 7th, and 9th aspects, following the literal BPHS Chapter 27 text.

none means the nodes cast no graha drishti at all.

Whatever you pick is echoed back in the convention block, and a separate nodes_in_drik_bala flag controls whether the nodes participate in the Chapter 26 strength math.

What does the bhava drishti block return?

The bhava block answers a practical question: how much drishti does each house actually receive? It sums the aspect load on all 12 bhavas, reading each house by both its cusp and its sign, and returns the total per house.

That lets you rank houses by how much planetary attention they get, flag a heavily aspected 7th or 10th, or show a user at a glance where the chart's energy points.

Because the underlying aspects come from the same BPHS Chapter 27 fractions, the bhava totals are consistent with the graha_drishti rows.

Two optional blocks cover the analysis most consumer APIs skip.

house_lord_drishti looks up, for each of the 12 houses, which planets aspect that house's lord and at what strength.

That saves a chain of lookups when you want to know whether the 10th lord is supported or afflicted.

jaimini_rashi_drishti is a different system entirely: Jaimini works sign-to-sign, where movable signs aspect fixed signs and so on, per Jaimini Sutras 1.3.13-16.
